Logitech: Using Flickr to Learn About Workspace Evolution

Hi!  I'm Erik Charlton the director of Product Marketing for Logitech's Retail Mouse business.  When I am not dreaming about mice, I am running, biking or flying high-power rockets.

I have to start off by admitting that I love Flickr. I regularly post my photos and enjoy looking at other people's photos. Not only is it a great way of staying in touch with friends all over the world, but I find that it is a great way of finding others who share my passion for high-power rocketry.

Lately, I have been exploring Flickr for images that show how the laptop has totally redefined what we once thought of as a static workspace. It is impressive how quickly the traditional workspace has changed, and my team is working hard to develop mice that complement this new-found freedom with innovations like the Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver and the Clip-and-Go Dock. Anyway, back to my Flickr search …

Erik Charlton

I was (pleasantly) surprised to find that there are more than 19,000 images that are tagged with "Logitech." It is great to see so many people photographing Logitech products. Some of the photos are incredibly artistic, while others generate valuable feedback about our products – both positive and negative. Since we often spend 2+ years developing each mouse, it's a lot of fun to see our babies in action out in the real world. And, seeing how people use our mice is one of many inputs that help us create features like the Nano-receiver and Clip-and-Go Dock. So, keep on Flickr'n. You never know – your next post might spark an idea that could help define the next-generation gaming mouse, the ultimate notebook mouse, or something even more radical!

batch rename window
Yes, we know you have taken a million digital photos over the last year, on your fancy shmancy new camera. And we also know the holiday season is almost upon us. Being the geek that you are, you could not just leave your pictures named digital_image_13456.jpg for your slide shows…

We just couldn't have that now, could we?

Oh, how well we know you.

Wayne from Florida wants AtA's help to create a script that will batch rename his purty pictures. Instead we are going to point him to some FREE software our friend Daniel at HackYourDay blogged about.

The software is called Batch File Renamer (clever eh?) from Cerebral Synergy.

Daniel says:

Here's one software that productivity nuts will love. If you've ever needed to catalog files, change extensions, add something to a filename in large batches you know the suffering that is "right click, select, type, enter" done over and over and over again. If you need a tool that can simply edit filenames, rename extensions and so on in a very powerful, customizable way, read on!…

I set out to find some sort of tool because I need to catalog files in batches of 100 about every two days. I get a batch of stuff in txt format and I need to do the following operations.

  • I need the files to be in the following format [ID - Number.txt]
  • I also need them in this format [ID - Number.html]

Practically this means that I need "032 - 001.txt", "032 - 002.txt" and so on (all the way to 100), also in .html format and I need to be able to customize all of this because for the next batch I will need "033? at the beginning.

Doing a Google search and trying a lot of free software that popped up I finally found Batch File Renamer. Not a fancy name, not a fancy program, but it gets the job done better than I've seen with other apps. First, head over to the Cerebral Synergy download page, scroll down and download Batch File Renamer.

He was able to change file extensions, mass change file names and it comes with all sorts of other free geeky options! Check out Daniel's article at HackYourDay here and the Free Cerebral Synergy download is here.

Moving Emails from Outlook (Windows) to Entourage (Mac)

Sent to you by FRANCISCO via Google Reader:

via Ask The Admin by Abhi Garg on 10/20/08

Given:

Microsoft Outlook - created by Microsoft. Platform: Windows.

Microsoft Entourage - created by Microsoft. Platform: OS X.

Requirement:

Move emails from Microsoft Outlook to Microsoft Entourage.

Common sense suggests:

In Windows, launch Microsoft Outlook, export everything to a .pst file. Copy this file to a USB drive or burn it to a disc. Copy it to Mac OS X, launch Entourage in Mac OS X and import the .pst file.

Well, that's what I thought.

The real solution:

It turns out Microsoft does NOT support email interchange between Outlook and Entourage. I was horrified shocked Not Surprised to learn about this lack of interoperability.

Entourage can only import from it's own archive format .rge or mbox files (text format files). Unfortunately, Outlook can NOT export to either of the two.

After doing some research and reading about convoluted methods of exporting one folder at a time from Outlook, converting those to mbox format and importing it in Entourage, I stumbled upon this nice excellent utility.

It's a Windows application and costs $10. You can download it and pay for it online.

Simply install it on your Windows OS and launch it. It will automatically read your Outlook files and convert them to Mbox format, and PRESERVE the attachments!!

Once the export is over, copy the newly created mbox files and port them to Mac OS X. Launch Entourage and import the files. You will lose Outlook Rules though. Also, the folders will be renamed per ASCII standards i.e. no blank spaces. Blank Spaces will be replaced with underscores.

It's possible that Entourage may suddenly not recognize mbox files either but don't worry - there's a work around. Import the mbox files in iMail. Then, import iMail emails into Entourage.

Another Microsoft horror story? What's your take.
